Andes‑type Hantanvirus can spread between humans
CAPE VERDE / JOHANNESBURG, May 6 — A cruise ship sailing near Cape Verde has reported an outbreak of the Andes‑type Hantanvirus, with three passengers dead and several others evacuated for treatment, health authorities said.
South Africa confirmed two infections from the Hondius, a vessel carrying about 150 people that departed Argentina. One British passenger is in intensive care in Johannesburg, while a Dutch passenger has died. Earlier fatalities included a Dutch couple and a German woman. The World Health Organization said it has recorded eight linked cases. Three close contacts left Cape Verde by air on Tuesday, including two infected crew members, and are expected to be transferred to the Netherlands. Swiss authorities separately confirmed that a former passenger tested positive after returning home and is being treated in Zurich. Officials said the risk of further spread in Switzerland is low.
Spain’s approval for the ship to dock in the Canary Islands has sparked political tension, with regional president Fernando Clavijo accusing Madrid of failing to provide information. Spain’s health ministry said the decision was made with WHO and EU coordination, citing humanitarian grounds after Cape Verde declined entry.
The Andes‑type Hantanvirus, found in South America, is the only known strain capable of human‑to‑human transmission. The incubation period can extend up to five weeks, and no vaccine is available.
