[13 August 2026] Europe Heatwave Dries Rivers, Hits Energy Output and Shipping

Europe’s worst‑on‑record summer heatwave has pushed temperatures above 45°C, driving major rivers to historic lows and disrupting both energy production and inland transport. Meteorological agencies say the extreme conditions are tied to climate change and warn of more frequent events ahead.

The Danube River has fallen sharply, forcing nuclear plants in Hungary, Romania and Slovakia to cut output. Hungary’s Paks plant briefly reduced generation to 10% due to a lack of cooling water, while Romania’s Cernavodă facility is weighing emergency measures to avoid shutting both reactors.

In Western Europe, the Rhine River has become too shallow for large cargo vessels, halting shipments of chemicals, steel inputs and refinery products. Economists estimate prolonged disruption could trim EU GDP growth by 0.4 percentage points and cause losses of up to €180 billion. Governments are imposing energy‑saving rules, monitoring water levels and exploring temporary dredging. The European Commission says it is coordinating shared reserves to help member states manage the crisis.
