Woman Shot Dead by NYPD After Random Knife Attacks in Times Square
A 49-year-old woman was fatally shot by New York police on Monday after she allegedly carried out two random knife attacks in Times Square, killing one victim and seriously injuring another.
Police said the suspect, identified as Pamela Cisneros of Queens, stabbed a 32-year-old woman and a 68-year-old man near West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue at around 4:26 p.m. The female victim later died in hospital, while the male victim has stabilized after suffering life‑threatening injuries.
According to authorities, Cisneros fled toward the NYPD Times Square substation, where officers confronted her. She refused repeated commands to drop two knives she was holding and allegedly threatened to kill the officers. Police deployed tasers twice without success before two officers opened fire at 4:27 p.m. She was pronounced dead at hospital. Police said she had a documented history of mental illness and the case is not terror‑related.
The incident unfolded in front of crowds of locals and tourists, some of whom expressed shock at the violence. The NYPD will conduct an internal investigation and release body‑camera footage, officials said.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani praised officers for preventing further harm, noting that mental‑health‑response teams are not deployed in situations involving active violence.Two knives were recovered at the scene, police said.
