Tower Crane Collapse at Kwai Chung Public Housing Site Kills Operator
A tower crane collapsed at a public housing construction site in Hong Kong’s Kwai Chung on Thursday afternoon, killing the operator and damaging a passing truck. The contractor responsible for the project, Woon Lee Construction, had previously been fined over two separate fatal incidents at its worksites in 2009 and 2011.
The incident occurred at approximately 4.27pm at the Tai Wo Hau Road phases 1 and 2 public housing development, near Pik Kwai House in Kwai Chung Estate. According to police, the 62‑year‑old crane operator fell together with the structure when it gave way and was pronounced dead at the scene.
As the crane collapsed, mud and debris were thrown onto Tai Wo Hau Road, striking a truck and shattering its windows. Police confirmed that the driver was unharmed. Firefighters conducted a search of the surrounding area and confirmed that no additional casualties were found.Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse and whether safety or structural issues were involved.
