US–Israel joint airstrikes hit multiple Iranian cities
The United States and Israel launched coordinated airstrikes on February 28 targeting several Iranian cities, including Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, Karaj and Kermanshah. The operations were reportedly codenamed Israel’s “Roaring Lion” and the US’s “Epic Fury.” Explosions were heard across Tehran, and the residence of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was said to have suffered major damage. Thousands of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps personnel were reported killed or injured, with several military bases and nuclear facilities damaged. A campus in Hormozgan Province was also struck, resulting in 40 deaths and 60 injuries.
Iran responded by launching dozens of ballistic missiles at targets in Israel and several Middle Eastern countries, including Jordan, Syria, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Yemen’s Houthi movement announced the resumption of Red Sea attacks, while US military installations — including the headquarters of the Fifth Fleet — were also targeted. The escalating conflict prompted immediate airspace closures across parts of the region, forcing widespread flight diversions and delays. Israel declared a nationwide state of emergency and suspended commercial flights.
US President Donald Trump said the operation aims to degrade Iran’s missile and nuclear capabilities and is expected to continue for several days. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep concern, stressing that Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity must be respected, and urging all parties to exercise restraint.
