[24 April 2026] EU’s New Battery Law Set to Force User‑Replaceable Batteries in Phones from 2027

The European Union’s Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 will mandate that devices using portable batteries must allow end users to remove and replace them with basic, commercially available tools. Manufacturers will no longer be able to rely on glued‑in or heat‑sealed battery designs, and batteries must be replaceable without damaging the device or the battery itself.

The rule forms part of the EU’s wider right‑to‑repair and circular‑economy agenda, aimed at extending device lifespans and reducing e‑waste. Regulators argue that many phones are discarded prematurely because battery replacement is too difficult or costly. By requiring accessible battery swaps, the EU expects to curb waste and lower long‑term ownership costs for consumers.

For manufacturers, compliance will require rethinking current sealed unibody designs. Devices may need to adopt screw‑ or clip‑based structures and avoid proprietary fasteners or adhesives. Brands must also supply replacement batteries for several years after a model’s release and cannot use software locks that degrade performance when a compatible replacement is installed.

Although the regulation applies only within the EU, analysts expect global ripple effects. Maintaining separate hardware designs for Europe and other markets is costly, so major vendors are likely to standardise on battery‑friendly designs worldwide—similar to the industry‑wide shift triggered by the EU’s USB‑C mandate.
