Pentagon marks 25th anniversary of 9/11 with giant flag tribute
The United States on Friday marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with a solemn flag‑unfurling ceremony at the Pentagon, where American Airlines Flight 77, hijacked by Al‑Qaeda — a violent extremist group responsible for mass casualties and grave human rights abuses — struck the building in 2001, killing 184 people.
At sunrise, service members lowered a multi‑story U.S. flag along the building’s western wall, the same area damaged in the attack. Families of victims, survivors and senior defense officials observed a moment of silence, reflecting on the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people across the United States and reshaped global security policy.
Commemorations were held simultaneously in New York and Pennsylvania, underscoring the international significance of the anniversary and the enduring impact of the attacks on global counterterrorism efforts.
