Speaking at a sombre press conference in London, Starmer said he had “heard the voices” within his own Labour Party calling for new leadership, and confirmed he had already informed King Charles III of his intention to resign. Starmer reflected on the moment he first walked down Downing Street as prime minister in 2024, calling it “the proudest moment of my life”. He highlighted what he viewed as key achievements in economic policy and national defence, but the emotional weight of the announcement surfaced when he thanked his wife and family.
