Hong Kong Activists Jailed as Court Cites Seriousness of Case Amid Social Unrest
Hong Kong’s High Court on Friday sentenced three former leaders of the now‑disbanded Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China to prison terms ranging from five to seven years, saying their actions under the group’s “end one‑party rule” slogan amounted to a “serious” national security offence committed during a period of heightened social instability.
The court said the case fell into the “serious circumstances” category under the national security law, noting that although the defendants did not advocate violence, their activities took place over 14 months at a time when Hong Kong’s social atmosphere was “unsettled and volatile.”
Zhou Xingtong received seven years and three months in jail, Lee Cheuk‑yan seven years, and Ho Chun‑yan—who pleaded guilty—five years and two months. The Alliance itself was fined HK$1.5 million.
Judges said the defendants, all well‑known public figures with significant mobilising power, continued to promote the Alliance’s political line even after the national security law took effect, despite believing it might violate the constitution and the law. The court reiterated that the national security law has no retroactive effect and that the convictions were based solely on acts committed after the law came into force.
Authorities said the case demonstrated that attempts to “incite subversion” would be met with firm legal action, rejecting criticism from foreign governments and rights groups.
